These two......

....are my favorite little people in the whole world.  Nothing makes me happier than being their mommy.  Everyday I feel so fortunate that I am able to stay home with them everyday and watch them grow and learn and try new things.

Maybe it's because both of their birthday are just around the corner or maybe I'm just feeling extra hormonal and sappy but I find myself getting teary-eyed at every little thing.  I am completely aware of how fast they are growing and how everyday they are doing things more and more on their own.  I also know that that's a good thing.  That means I'm doing my job as a parent by teaching them how to figure things out, how to keep trying when they mess up, and how to do it all by themselves.  And yet while I'm cheering them on, I'm also crying on the inside knowing that my babies are no longer babies.

Savannah is almost five.  That's one whole hand! I can't believe I'm the parent of an almost five year old!  It seems like just yesterday that I was complaining about my aching back from carrying her around all over the place.  It's rare that she asks me to carry her anymore but every now and then before bedtime she'll ask me to carry her upstairs to bed.  And instead of telling her she's too big and she's fully capable of walking on her own, I pick up my almost five year old and she wraps her lanky little limbs around me, and I trudge up our steep flight of stairs.  This is no easy task but I do it because I know one day she won't ask me to carry her anymore and one day she'll be too big for me to carry anyway.  So for now I'll carry her and I'll cherish each of those steps and I'll silently wish that those steps never end.

Walker is almost two.  Really he's no longer a baby and yet he'll always be my baby.  At this age it seems like every day he wakes up older, and I don't mean just a day older.  The days go by so fast that it's like he's growing at warp speed.  I try to remember Savannah at this age.  She seemed older.  I think because she's always been slightly more independent.  Or maybe because with my first child I couldn't wait to cheer her on to her next milestone.  But now I know how quickly those milestones come and once they come you can't go backwards.  I just want to slow down the milestones.  Slow down everything with my little Walker-man.  Keep him little for as long as I can.  He now gives real hugs.  The kind where he raises his arms up to me to be picked up.  Then he overlaps his hands behind my neck and nuzzles his head into that spot between my neck and shoulder.  And he just stays there for what seems like forever.  I breathe him in.  There's still that faint baby smell that hasn't been totally replaced by the smell of dirt and sweat that's oh so common among little boys.  I savor these moments because one day that faint baby smell will be gone.  That's what makes me the saddest.....knowing that I'm down to my last few months of breathing in my baby.  It's going to happen suddenly just like it did with Savannah.  I won't even realize it at first.  And then one day it will hit me.....my baby days are over.

Don't get me wrong; I am excited about watching my children grow and discovering all the amazing things that they are going to accomplish.  I just wish it could happen slower.  But since the days will continue to pass every 24 hours, I'll continue to savor and fully appreciate every minute that I'm so fortunate to spend with them both.

Apple Pickin' 2014

It's that time of year again!!  Time to kick off the fall season and pick some apples! Last weekend Savannah, Walker, and I headed to Millstone Creek Orchards.  There was a little bit of crispness in the air that morning which helped to make the trip all that much more enjoyable.  Unfortunately Oscar was out of town so he missed out on picking this years crop, but we had Walker's pair of hands which picked more than his fair share of good and bad apples :)

We definitely missed having daddy along but we still had a great time and Savannah couldn't wait to get home to make apple pie, apple cake, and applesauce.

WEA 21 Months

It's been such a fun month watching Walker grow and become more of a little boy.  The baby months are slipping away faster than I like but at the same time I'm excited to see the unique and special little person that Walker is becoming.  I'm constantly amazed at how different he is from his sister; they both have such strong personalities but Walker has a much softer temperament.  They fight more than they get along but during those brief moments when I catch them snuggling or playing together, it totally melts my heart.
Now on to my little man......
Walker's 21 month milestones/achievements/random tidbits:
~he is doing great at his PMO class! He has never cried at drop off, he runs out smiling and laughing, and his teachers say that he's happy for the whole three hours.
~he is obsessed with trucks and trains! He is constantly saying "tuck" and "choo choo".  He loves to watch cars and trucks out on the roads and his favorite tv show right now is Thomas and Friends.
~he has started to sing along while watching movies in the car.  He obviously can't say the words but he likes to hum along.
~he is starting to say a few more words: baaball (basketball), socks, soooes (shoes), sool (stool), choo choo (referring to trains), tucks (trucks), pupp (puppy), sis (referring to Savannah aka sissy), hor (horses), hoo hoo (for owls), hot, step, up, mama, daddy
~his new favorite sound is a piggy snort.  He does it whenever he sees a pig on tv or in books which, surprisingly, is quite often.
~he loves to dance and jump around to music.
~he has become so easy to put to bed.  After we read a few books, I rock him for about 15 minutes and then put him in his crib.  He rolls over, smiles up at me, and waves bye-bye.  He may stay awake for a couple more minutes or he may talk to himself and play with his stuffed animals for up to 30 minutes before falling asleep.  Every night this amazes me because I still spend up to an hour trying to get Savannah to bed.  Just another example at how these two are so different.
~his bottom 2 incisor teeth are slowly pushing their way up.
~he has absolutely no interest in sitting down to eat at mealtimes.  He may take 2 bites of whatever is on his plate before he climbs down to go play.  He is far too busy to have to sit down and eat.
~he is wearing size 2t clothing, size 6 diaper, and weights about 32 pounds.
cutie!
two of his favorite things--monkey-man, and an airplane
such a goofball

giving hugs to Eli
Walker is such a lovable little guy.  He is very affectionate......always giving hugs and kisses.  He waves to everyone and blows kisses to say goodbye.  He is also very sensitive and his feelings get hurt quite easily.  He tries to behave and he will voluntarily go sit in time-out at just the mention of it.  He isn't nearly as destructive as he was just a month ago.  Instead he prefers to play with just a few toys and whatever Savannah and I are currently touching.  He has the cutest sense of humor.  We're always saying how funny he is and apparently we're not the only ones who see it.  Ms. Carolyn and Alisha at the gym tell me almost daily how he does the funnest things with the sole purpose of making himself or someone else laugh.  He must get that trait from Oscar----who else laughs at their own jokes :)

We sure do adore this little man.  Every day he does something to melt my heart and every minute I'm so thankful that he's mine.  On to the next month....

A Weekend in Boston

The kiddos and I flew to Boston on Friday September 12.  Oscar left a few hours ahead of us so it was super easy flight since we didn't have to worry about taking and checking our luggage.  We took a cab from the airport to our hotel which was conveniently located right across from Boston Square.  The kids and I walked around the park, found a carousel to ride, and had a quick lunch at Panera before heading to our room for Walker to take a nap.  A couple of hours later we were back in the park feeding the swans and ducks.  The weather was absolutely perfect---crisp, low 60s, and bright sunshine.  We walked everywhere within a two mile radius and soaked up all the sights.  Boston really is a beautiful town.  There area we were in reminds me so much of London.....the small, clean streets; old, historic buildings; beautiful flowers.  If the winters weren't so cold I would definitely want to live there someday.

Saturday morning I did a quick workout in the hotel gym and then we headed out to grab a quick breakfast before meeting the Austin family for a Duck Tour.  We all loved the tour!  Once our ride made it into the river all the kids were given the chance to drive the boat.

The USC/Boston College game was at eight o'clock Saturday night so I decided that the kids and I would go for the tailgating part and then we would take a cab back to the hotel while Oscar stayed for the game.  However, the downpour that started as soon as we got to the school changed all the plans.  After spending an hour pushing the stroller through the rain and puddles, we finally made it to the tailgating spot (this school is the absolute worst when it comes to tailgating).  We socialized, ate, and then all four of us headed back to the hotel.  Oscar joined LoAn and Carter in the hotel bar to watch the game on tv and I went to bed with the kiddos.  Oscar had to do a 12 mile run in the morning which meant I had to get up extra early to get my run in so he could get out early, too.  After one final meet up with the Austins for breakfast, the Alvarez family headed to the Boston Children's Museum.  The kids spent a couple of hours climbing, jumping, and exploring before it was time to head back to the airport.

It was such a nice weekend!!  Sometimes these quick trips aren't always worth the effort but this one was really a lot of fun and I'm so glad we all decided to go.  It was nice to see the Austin family and it was so nice to get out of the 90 degree temps at home and to feel a little fall-like weather.  I already can't wait to visit again!
